Page Turners Book Club – Grades 3-5

Book: Spy School, by Stuart Gibbs (Graphic novel)

The Program

For the first 25 minutes of book club we discussed the book. This is a VERY animated group so I did not prepare questions, knowing that they would dive right into the discussion. We do always start by going around the table and scoring the book from 1-10 and sharing why it was given the score. They really love scoring the book. This one was very mixed, kids either liked it or they didn’t, no in between!

Activity

Usually we do some kind of craft in the second half of book club, but today I thought we’d play a memory game. The idea is that a spy has to walk into a room and remember all the random things they see, so we tried our hand at that. I collected random items (measuring cup, frog statue, nail clippers, exercise band, etc) and put 10-15 items in three boxes. The kids had 1 minute to look at the contents of a box, then they went back to their seats and wrote down everything they remembered. Then we listed the contents together as a group. The game went well, but next time I think I’ll do two boxes instead of three.
