Crafty Readers is for grades 2 & 3.
The Book: The Alien Next Door, by A. I. Newton and Ill by Anjan Sarkar
The Program: For the first 20 minutes we had a discussion of the book. We discussed the following questions:
- Why does Zeke’s family move a lot?
- What things does Zeke do at school that make him look different?
- Who are the characters in the book? Would you like to be friends with them?
- What is the purpose of Zeke’s and his parents’ glasses?
- Do Harris and Roxy think the same thing about Zeke? How are their thoughts the same or different?
- What do you think will happen in the second book? Will Harris prove Zeke is an alien?
The activity: Aliens in a UFO! I took 2 bowls and stapled them together to be the UFO. Then I made yarn pom-poms to be the alien. The kids used googely eyes to make their aliens, and markers, pom-poms, and glitter glue to decorate their UFOs. We attached a clear cup over the alien using glue dots. It was a fun evening!
